Cowboys and Indians

Tessa Sonik Fabric Collection has taken to the Wild West with their latest offering. Inspired by the current international infatuation with ikat dyeing, the Cowboys and Indians collection traces this tradition to the native Americans.

Of course, where there are American Indians, there are cowboys. Juxtaposing the two cultures, the collection uses natural yarns like cottons, linens and viscose to represent the Indian heritage, while leathers and embossed PVC mimic the cowboy’s pony skin.

Tessa Sonik fabric house is known to contextualise and re-invent international trends at a local level, and the dying process of ikat is one such trend currently grabbing attention worldwide. Thought to be one of the oldest forms of textile decoration, ikat has coloured the lives of natives of South and Central America for thousands of years.

The dying process, similar to tie-dye, uses bindings in desired patterns to resist the spread of dye. Alternative bindings and colours are used to produce elaborate and colourful patterns. Once the dying is complete, the bindings are removed and the threads are woven into cloth.

This handcrafted tradition inspired the gentle, feminine side of the collection, in aquas and soft greens, while the other half is informed by the masculine, conquering spirit of the cowboy in reds and blues.
