Dokter and Misses: Kassena Town

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring

Husband-and-wife design team Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo of Dokter and Misses have launched an exciting new range.

The Kassena Town collection is a tribute to the fascinating architectural structures created by the Kassena people in West Africa. Katy and Adriaan view the designer collection as a village in itself. “It is our dream village with all the complexities of a community. A town always needs a few homes, a place of worship, a liquor store and at least one guy with a fast car who thinks he’s king.”

The range is made up of “Home” (a new take on the original Dokter and Misses server), “Horseman” (a multifunctional chair and bench), the towering “Watchtower” cabinet, and “Sleep” (a drinks cabinet come uplight).

For Dokter and Misses, these pieces represent “the tension between sculptural and functional form,” says Katy. “As with a lot of our work, it’s about the interplay between two and three dimensions.”

The collection is currently on its way to renowned New York design gallery, R & Company for the Grains of Paradise exhibition, in collaboration with Southern Guild. “It’s a real privilege and opportunity and we’re looking forward to the response,” says Katy.

Porky Hefer’s nests, ceramics from Ardmore and seating from Senegalese designer Babacar Niang will also be showcased. The exhibition runs from 24 March until 30 April at 82 Franklin Street, New York, 10013.
