Anton Pietersen liked Taylor Simpson’s handlebars design. : "This is the slickest man bokkie thing I've seen. Almost enough reason for me to get on a bike and attempt the Cape Argus, barring I fall though… Maybe not the most practical handlebars, but really good looking."|
The trophy head by White Faux Taxidermy was Lise Avis’s pick. : "The shimmering gold caught my eye. It is made out of resin and completely animal friendly and you can get the pieces in almost every colour combination imaginable, which makes it easy to bring into any space you choose to decorate. "|
Malibongwe Tyilo’s bokkie was designed by Keri Muller. : "Definitely nostalgia. As a child I loved origami, loved folding and playing with paper to create new shapes. What Keri does with old paperbacks, the way she repurposes them into fascinating new shapes, is far beyond origami and much more beautiful."|
Sumien Brink, our content director, chose this one by Magda van der Vloed. : "I love Magda van der Vloed’s Eco Kudu crocheted from recycled shopping bags. I inherited a jersey my mom crocheted that looks exactly like this. Maybe this winter I will wear it."|
Annemarie Meintjes, our deputy editor, nominated a bokkie by Tomohiro Inaba. : She says: "I choose the Tomohiro Inaba bokkie because it is so symbolic of what is happening around us right now. Life — design, principles, disciplines — is unravelling, taking on new shapes and functions."|
Nadine Botha fell for Takeshi Sawada’s Bambi. : "It's just so frivolous and whimsical. Why does design always have to be serious? And look at the soft pelt... It makes me want to stroke Bambi gently with my cheek."|
Oh bokkie!|
VISI reader Leani van Deventer sent us this bokkie gift wrap from Papertrail. : "I would like to add to your VISI bokkie collective."|
Diane Lubbe from VISI's advertising team chose Design Team’s D’Afrique Du Sud fabric collection : "It’s appealing because I like the way that Design Team integrates South African flair into a lot of their designs. This bokkie caught my eye immediately, because of the clever way it’s been drawn."|
This bokkie from Monkeybiz caught the eye of Cecilia Boughen of VISI's advertising team. : "I love the modern form this bokkie takes while still using traditional beading materials. I also love the fact that buying it helps Monkeybiz to continue the great work it does in supporting creative individuals living in Cape Town townships."|
Another VISI reader, Marcus Berger sent one of his own works. : "I opened my own design studio at the Woodstock Exchange and made a blesbok skull wall mount for the studio decor. There will be more to come in due course."|
Also a VISI reader, Karla Duterloo sent us some of her very own mosaic bokkies : "Here are some of the bokkies I made in the past year. I am also making bulls heads in the same style. The heads were on show at the Stellenbosch Dorpstraat Gallery. Most of them were sold but I am working on a new collection."|
WORDS Sumien Brink
The new VISI 65 Autumn edition has landed and, well, oh bokkie… you’re gonna love it! Here’s what our content director, Sumien Brink, has to say.
Autumn is about getting comfortable and cozy; a mellow time for reflection. It’s a time for indulging in the last hot days of summer, for long walks and slowing down. It’s definitely a time for stocking up on books, looking for great Cognac glasses and statement vases. In autumn you stock up the pantry and forget about the fridge.
I know that autumn is finally here when I’m woken by the sad sound of the Green Point foghorn, and the whole city bowl is shrouded in a thick layer of fog. Annemarie Meintjes says that in Joburg, autumn is a colour, a smell, mist at dawn, and the smell of the first fires at dusk… I hope you enjoy the soft season as much as I do.
The tapestry bokkie on our cover inspired each of the VISI team to find a bokkie that we can’t live without. Join our special VISI bokkie collective by sending a picture of your favourite bokkie to info@visi.co.za.
